The Unfinished¶
Reflections of home
Somebody started making this world and stopped halfway. Something inside it is finishing it its own way.
| Kind of world | Reflections of home |
|---|---|
| Serum in the arrival Box | 2 ampoules |
| Native Serum stand-in | |
| Quests | Yes: see your Traveler's Guide |
the-unfinished-arrivalWhat happens when you arrive¶
The Box opens onto a flat green plane ruled in grid lines. The sign beside it says sign.welcome.text, and nothing else. The tree next to you has no leaves, just a purple and black checkerboard where they should be. Somebody started making this world and stopped halfway, and nobody came back.
South of the Box, a villager with no face stands staring at a wall. Talk to it. It is NPC_07, and it would very much like a name.
The rule: an unfinished world¶
The world is one long slab of ground hanging over the void, running south from the Box through four zones, each more broken than the last:
| Zone | What it's like |
|---|---|
| The Test Map | The developer's flat grid, with sample houses full of empty frames. Safe. |
| The Half-Built Town | Half scaffolding, townsfolk with no faces walking into walls, a market where every barrel is labelled item.unknown. |
| The Seams | The ground comes apart in squares over nothing. Glowing cubes of unbaked data float above the path. |
| The Draft | The Autofill's territory, with its arena at the end. Your own home may be pasted here. |
| The Dev Room | Hidden in the void underneath the Draft. |
Glitches you will meet¶
| Glitch | What it does | How to deal with it |
|---|---|---|
| The void | Fall off the slab and you are dropped back at the start of the zone you were in. No death, just lost ground. | Watch the gaps in the Seams. |
| Fake floors and walls | Some blocks look like floor or wall but have no hitbox. You walk (or fall) right through. | A |
| Untextured water | Water that is only a picture. | Same: the lens shows it. |
| The Loop | A tunnel that puts anyone walking it forwards back at its start. | Walk it backwards, or just keep trying: the sixth attempt gets through. |
| The shed | It's bigger on the inside. Its door leads down into a hall in the void. | Explore it: the hall's chest is a good one. |
| The Autofill | Something inside the world finishing it its own way, by copying and pasting. Its stitched blocks bite: 1 damage a second while you stand on them. | Sneak across them and they leave you alone. |
The music is one eight-second elevator loop, played clean on the Test Map, skipping in the town, backwards in the Seams and on top of itself in the Draft. Sounds that nobody made are a dry voice reading the sound's name aloud.
Your quest: The Unfinished¶
The world is shared. Frames filled, names given and the boss defeated count for everyone, so a later visitor is never stuck behind something someone else already did.
| Step | Zone | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Test Map | Talk to the villager standing with its face to a wall south of the Box. |
| 2 | Test Map | Talk to it again and give it a name. A text box opens; type anything up to the length it shows. It gets a face. |
| 3 | Test Map | Fill 3 grey placeholder frames in the Test Map's houses with real blocks. |
| 4 | Town | Head south to the Half-Built Town. NPC_07 waits in the plaza. |
| 5 | Town | Name 3 of the townsfolk. Talk to the ones walking into walls. |
| 6 | Town | Fill 6 of the town's frames before the Autofill gets there from the south. |
| 7 | Seams | Follow the path into the Seams and read 4 of the Developer's notes. |
| 8 | Draft | Something waits in the arena at the end of the Draft. Break it to open the hatch. |
| 9 | Dev Room | Climb down the shaft under the arena and read the note on the desk. |
| 10 | Dev Room | Decide what happens to the world. |
The names you give are the world's, not yours: they show over each person's head, on the town's signs and in what they say, for everyone who visits. The world's signs are written for whoever is reading them, so expect to see your own username and the name of your save on them.
Placeholder frames¶
An empty frame is a dashed outline where a block should be. Right-click it with any full block to put that block in (it uses the block up). When every frame of a building is filled, the building snaps into the house it was meant to be. Frames can't be broken.
the-unfinished-framesThe Autofill's front¶
The first time anyone reaches the town, the Autofill wakes and its front starts to creep north from the Draft, one block every 8 seconds while anyone is in the world. Every building it passes that nobody has finished, it fills its own way: mirrored, seamless, stitched with its own biting blocks. It stops at the north edge of the town, so the Test Map is always safe. Finish the southern houses first.
The first time you walk into the Draft, the Autofill may also paste a mirrored copy of what you built around your Box at home into one of its three plots, stitched down the middle. (Only blocks people placed are copied, never chests or their contents. Without a home Box it pastes a stitched house instead.)
Creatures¶
Nothing hostile appears on the Test Map, near the Box or in the Dev Room, and all of them are gone for good once the world is finished.
| Creature | Where | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| T-Poser | The town (only behind the Autofill's front) and the Seams. | Frozen in a T-pose. It never moves while anyone is looking at it; look away and it slides toward you, arms out. |
| MISSING_MODEL | The Seams and the Draft. | Nothing to see but a floating name tag and a shadow on the ground, coming closer. |
| Duplicate | The Draft. | The Autofill's copy of an ordinary animal or mob: stretched or squashed, mirrored, making another creature's noises. And it hunts. |
| The Stitched | The Draft's arena. | The boss. See below. |
The Stitched, and the three endings (spoilers)
The Stitched is a creature the Autofill built from pieces of every mob it has seen: a cow's body on a spider's legs, a zombie's arms, a chicken where the head should be. Every third of its health it tears a few Duplicates off itself, and when it loses sight of you it "stitches" across the arena to a new spot. Its death breaks the seal on the hatch for everyone.
In the Dev Room you read the Developer's last note, and NPC_07 asks its question. The first player to answer chooses for the whole world, for good:
| Ending | What happens |
|---|---|
| Finish it | The Autofill is shut off, every building snaps into its finished version, the stitched ground comes back and its creatures are gone. NPC_07 runs the town, and you get its save file, |
| Let the Autofill finish it | Every building it hadn't reached, it reaches now. Seamless, wrong and empty: the townsfolk are gone and NPC_07 is a nameless villager. |
| Leave it unfinished | The Autofill stops where it stands. Nothing else changes, and everyone keeps their name and face. |
Everyone who gets this far gets the
Dev Wand, whichever ending was chosen.
the-unfinished-stitchedThe developer's crates¶
Test chests are scattered through every zone. They are mostly placeholder junk (paper, stone, planks, bread, Placeholder Stone, Grid Floor), plus some real finds, and every crate has a 1 in 5 chance of a Serum Ampoule.
| Crates in | Can hold |
|---|---|
| Test Map | Cobblestone, glass; |
| Town | Bricks, iron ingots; |
| The hall under the shed | Books, emeralds; a Hitbox Lens (always) and a Fly Toggle (50%). |
| Seams | |
| Draft | |
| The market's barrels | Apples, carrots, leather, candles, the odd Spawn Egg ???. |
Debug tools¶
| Tool | What it does | Where it works |
|---|---|---|
debug.fly = !debug.fly: creative-style flight on and off. |
The Unfinished only. Leaving, dying or logging in elsewhere turns it off. | |
| Ten seconds with no collision (spectator mode), then back to normal. It won't take you through the Autofill's seal before the Stitched falls. | The Unfinished only. | |
| Every creature within 48 blocks glows through walls for 10 seconds. Here it also shows the fake blocks. | Any world. | |
| Hatches something random from another of the mod's worlds (never a boss), and tells you what it was supposed to be. | Any world. | |
| Copy and paste a box of blocks, up to 8 by 8 by 8. | Any world. | |
| Use it on a block at home and NPC_07 loads there, with its name and face, to live at your base as a companion. | Anywhere but The Unfinished. |
Using the Dev Wand: use it on a block to mark a corner (twice for a box). Sneak and use in the air to copy. Sneak and use on a block to paste, turned to face the way you face. Then wait 30 seconds before the next paste. It skips chests and anything else that holds items, liquids, unbreakable blocks and storage blocks (no pasting diamond blocks), and only fills air.
What to bring home¶
Serum and getting home¶
- The arrival Box's cache holds 2 Serum Ampoules, and any crate may hold another (1 in 5).
- Native stand-in:
Unbaked Data. It replaces Somnium Powder in the Synthesizer. Break the glowing
Unbaked Data Cubes floating in the Seams for 1 or 2 each.
Tips¶
- Name NPC_07 something you're happy to see on signs for the rest of the world's life.
- Head to the southern end of town first: the Autofill fills those houses before the northern ones.
- Sneak across any stitched Autofill ground.
- Grab a Hitbox Lens before the Seams. The fake floors there drop you into the void.
- In the Loop, turn round and walk backwards.
Birds¶
Birds you can photograph for your bird log here. Open one to turn it round, watch it move and hear its call.
- Placeholder Bird: common
- Autofill Crow: rare

The traveler's tape¶
Every arrival Box has a chest by its door holding a cassette: the last traveler reading their journal of this world aloud. This is what they say. It gives a lot away.
Read the journal (spoilers)
The Box opened onto a flat green plane ruled in grid lines, with a sign beside it that said sign.welcome.text, and nothing else. The tree by the Box has no leaves, only a purple and black checkerboard where they should be. Somebody started making this place and stopped halfway, and nobody came back. There's a villager here with no face who asked me for a name. I panicked and said 'Greg'. He's so happy. He tells everyone. The world is falling apart around us and Greg doesn't care, because he's Greg. Further south the town is half scaffolding, and past it the ground comes apart in squares over nothing at all. Something down there is finishing the world its own way, copying and pasting, and where it has been everything is wrong. When you have seen enough, step back into the Box with the Serum still in you and shut the door.
