Clone Fields

Hostile

Nothing here dies alone. Kill one, and two more get up.

What happens when you arrive

Wide, gentle plains under a pale sky. The grass is all exactly the same pale green, as if every blade were copied from one. Two crows on the fence, then four. It looks like any plains at home, until you kill something.

The rule: nothing dies alone

When you kill a mob here, it doesn't fall. It comes apart into two smaller copies of itself. Kill those, and each splits into two more. So one zombie is seven fights. The smallest copies stay dead, and each one leaves a dollop of Clone Gel behind.

Generation How many Size Health Melee damage Speed
The original 1 full full full normal
First clones 2 60% 50% 75% 115%
Last clones 4 36% 25% about 56% about 132%

The clones are smaller, frailer and faster. The last four are quick little things that are hard to hit and hard to outrun.

  • It happens to every mob you kill: monsters and animals alike. (Slimes and magma cubes already split their own way and are left alone.)
  • Only mobs you (or your arrows) have hit split. A mob that dies to sunlight, lava or another mob just dies.
  • The four final clones each drop one Clone Gel: four per original mob.

What lives here

The usual plains animals by day (cows, sheep, pigs, chickens, horses) and the usual monsters at night. Nothing new, but every fight you start is seven times longer than it looks.

Even killing a cow for food means seven kills.

What to bring home

Find Where Why it's worth it
Clone Gel Dropped by the last, smallest clones. A Serum active: it goes into the Synthesizer in place of Somnium Powder.

The land is ordinary plains with ordinary ores underground.

Serum and getting home

  • The arrival Box's cache holds 2 Serum Ampoules.
  • Native stand-in: Clone Gel. It replaces Somnium Powder in the Synthesizer. Every full fight (one mob and all six of its clones) gives four gel.
  • When you leave, close the Box door fast: the little ones are quick.

Tips

  • Pick your fights. Fleeing is a real option, and so is not starting fights at night.
  • A sword with a sweeping edge is perfect for the last clones, which come in a crowd.
  • Fight with your back to a wall or in a 1-wide corridor so the fast clones can't surround you.
  • Farming gel? Choose weak, slow mobs. A zombie's whole family is far easier than a skeleton's or a spider's.
  • Hunt animals during the day for an easy supply of gel.

The traveler's tape

Every arrival Box has a chest by its door holding a cassette: the last traveler reading their journal of this world aloud. This is what they say. It gives a lot away.

Read the journal (spoilers)

The plains here look like any plains at home, until you kill something. The zombie I put down at dusk got back up as two zombies, a little smaller and a little weaker, and each of those got up as two more. Seven fights for one, and the small ones are quicker than the big ones; I have learned to run more than I fight. The smallest copies dissolve into a grey gel, and that gel goes into the Synthesizer in place of Somnium Powder, so the fights are worth it once in a while. When I have enough, I walk back to the Box with the Serum still in me and close the door before anything else can follow.
