ten-years-later-houseWhat happens when you arrive¶
You know the hills before you know why. This is your own world, the same terrain from the same seed, only ten years further on, and nobody kept it while you were gone. Your house is still standing where you built it, but the windows are out, the torches are long dead and the cobblestone has grown a coat of moss. There are no new blocks and no strange creatures here. The strangeness is recognising the place.
The rule: everything you built has aged¶
As you walk around, every chunk near you is brought over from your home world, and whatever players built there is copied in ten years older. The natural terrain is untouched; only builds age.
| What you built | What it looks like now |
|---|---|
| Torches, lanterns, redstone torches, candles | All burnt out and gone. |
| Glass blocks and panes | Most are broken (about 6 in 10). |
| Cobblestone | Mostly mossy. Its stairs, slabs and walls about half the time. |
| Stone bricks | Mossy or cracked. |
| Planks | Rotted through in places (about 1 in 7). |
| Wool and carpets | Holes everywhere: a third of the wool and most carpets are gone. |
| Copper | Gone fully green. |
| Crops and farmland | Fields have gone back to grass and dirt. Paths have grassed over. |
| Chests, signs, barrels | Empty. Anything worth taking was taken years ago. |
| Anything valuable | Not copied at all: storage blocks (iron, gold, diamond...), shulker boxes, beacons, anvils, enchanting tables, spawners and vaults, lodestones, your Box and your lab machines. The ground there is bare, as it was before you built. |
Copied builds sprout vines on their open sides. The world keeps up with home, too: something you build at home today will be standing here already ten years old the next time you come near it.
It's still decaying¶
The weathering hasn't stopped. While you watch, cobblestone keeps turning mossy, stone bricks crack, and glass shatters into air. Plants grow four times as fast as at home.
ten-years-later-villageWho lives here now¶
| At home | Here |
|---|---|
| Villagers | Every one of them is a zombie villager. The villages are full of the turned. |
| Wandering traders and iron golems | Gone. None appear. |
| Everything else | The same animals and monsters as your home world. |
What to bring home¶
Nothing new grows or spawns here, but it is still useful:
- Mossy and cracked blocks. The weathering makes mossy cobblestone, mossy and cracked stone bricks and oxidized copper for free.
- Fast crops and saplings. Plant here and everything grows four times as fast.
- A preview. Walk round your base and see which parts of it would survive a decade.
Serum and getting home¶
- The arrival Box's cache holds 2 Serum Ampoules, and the Box stands close to where you started.
- There is no native Serum ingredient, but the land has ordinary ores and plants, so a stranded traveler can live off it like at home.
- Your home here is not your home: its chests are empty, and your bed and stores are back in the real world.
Tips¶
- Don't stay out after dark near a village. Every villager is a zombie now.
- Bring torches. Every light you ever placed has burnt out.
- Glass you place here will slowly shatter, too; use other blocks for shelter.
- Changes you make here stay here. Nothing you break in this world touches your real one.
Birds¶
Birds you can photograph for your bird log here. Open one to turn it round, watch it move and hear its call.
- Window Swallow: common
- Verdigris Cockerel: rare
The traveler's tape¶
Every arrival Box has a chest by its door holding a cassette: the last traveler reading their journal of this world aloud. This is what they say. It gives a lot away.
Read the journal (spoilers)
I knew the hills before I knew why: this is my own world, only ten years further on, and nobody kept it while I was gone. My house is still standing where I built it, but the windows are out, the torches are long dead, and the cobblestone has grown a coat of moss. Anything worth taking was taken years ago; the chests are empty and the vaults are bare stone again. It is still decaying around me, and the villages are full of the turned, so I do not stay out after dark. The weathered Box stands close to where I started; with the Serum still in me and the door shut, it takes me back to the hallway, and from there, I hope, to the world I left.
