Looking up from the arrival Box: a whole upside-down land of moss and stone hanging overhead, a small glowing sun between, glow berries dangling

What happens when you arrive

There is no sky. You land on ordinary green hills, but when you look up, another land hangs upside down over your head: mossy hills, stone cliffs and caves, about a hundred blocks up, with glow berries dripping from it. Between the two, small suns float in the warm golden air, and one burns a short walk from the Box. Nothing here hunts you. Then you jump, and notice you come down a little slower than you should.

The rule: the higher you go, the lighter you get

Gravity fades toward the middle of the hollow, halfway between the floor and the hanging land. It is full strength 80 blocks or more below the middle, drops in a straight line as you climb, and is one tenth of normal right at the middle.

Where you are How it feels
The floor (around sea level) A little light underfoot: roughly four fifths of normal gravity.
A mountain top Much lighter: you can leap like a hare.
The open middle Barely any pull at all. Things drift down.
Falling from the hanging land The drop starts very slowly and speeds up as you near the floor.

Falls are softer here, but not free. Fall damage counts only the gravity you actually fell through, so a fall through the weak middle hurts much less than the same drop at home. A fall from the hanging land all the way down is still a long fall that gathers real speed near the bottom.

Animals feel the light gravity too. Every few minutes you are reminded of it: "Far overhead, a stone breaks loose from the hanging land and falls a long, slow way down."

What else is different What it means for you
No monsters Hostile mobs never spawn. Farm animals graze on the floor.
No day or night There is no sun in the sky and no sky light. Everything is lit by the Hollow Suns, glow berries, and a dim golden glow everywhere.
Crops need light Plant near a sun or under the glow berries, or bring torches.
No rain Ever.
Beds Explode, as in the Nether.
Fog Golden haze from about 32 to 160 blocks.

The hanging land

The land overhead is a second world turned upside down: its bedrock is the roof, and its surface faces you across the gap. Its grass is moss, it holds no water (it would pour down), and its sand and gravel are fixed in place. It is hung with glow berry vines. Reaching it is the adventure: build up from a mountain top and let the light gravity do the rest.

The floor has ordinary ores, caves, amethyst geodes and the odd dungeon underground.

What to bring home

Find Where Why it's worth it
Hollow Sun The suns themselves: about one chunk in 24 has one, halfway up the hollow. A light as bright as glowstone that glows even in the dark. Breaks as easily as glass and drops itself, so carry it home as a lamp.
Glow berries Hanging thick from the land above. Food and light.
Moss The hanging land's surface. Lots of it, easy to reach from below.

Serum and getting home

  • The arrival Box's cache holds 2 Serum Ampoules.
  • There is no native Serum stand-in.
  • The Box stands on the floor near the nearest sun. If you go up to the hanging land, note where the Box is before you climb: everything looks different upside down.

Tips

  • Use the sun near the Box as a landmark; it is visible from far off in the haze.
  • Bring a water bucket for safety anyway. The light gravity softens falls, but the bottom of a long drop is fast.
  • Mine Hollow Suns with any tool and take a stack home: there is no other way to get them.
  • With no monsters and no night, this is one of the safest worlds to build a base in.

Birds

Birds you can photograph for your bird log here. Open one to turn it round, watch it move and hear its call.

The traveler's tape

Every arrival Box has a chest by its door holding a cassette: the last traveler reading their journal of this world aloud. This is what they say. It gives a lot away.

Look up here and there is no sky: there is land, upside down, forests of moss and stone hanging a hundred blocks over my head. Small suns float in the space between, one a short walk from the Box, and glow berries hang thick from the land above; crops only grow in good light, near a sun or under the berries. The higher I climb, the lighter I get: on the floor I am a little light, on a mountain top I can leap like a hare. A fall from the land above starts slow, but it is still a fall. Nothing here hunts. I have never slept so well, nor been so far from home.
