What happens when you arrive

You step out of the Box into a meadow, and the meadow is a forest: every blade of grass is a tree, a sheep is a cliff that walks, and pollen drifts past like snow. The world hasn't grown. You have shrunk to a quarter of your size. Your legs carry you nowhere fast, your arms barely reach a shelf, and a spider is something out of a nightmare.

The rule: you are a quarter of your size

You shrink gradually as you walk away from the Box, and you are always normal size close to the arrival Box (so you can still use it and shut its door).

What changes How it feels
Size A quarter of normal. Every block looks four times as big; cows and zombies tower over you.
Speed Just over half your usual walking speed.
Reach Half your usual reach. Get close to what you want to break or hit.
Strength Your blows do half damage.
Falls The one thing that got easier: you can drop about two and a half times as far before a fall hurts.

Days, nights and weather are normal. Farm animals graze here and the usual monsters come out at night, but phantoms never come.

What lives here

Creature What it's like How to deal with it
Garden Beetles Grazing beetles the size of a sheep, which to you is the size of a house. They graze in herds of 2 to 4 and ignore you. Hit one and it charges, and the whole herd nearby charges with it. 18 health, 4 damage, and a tough shell (6 armour) that shrugs off part of every blow. Go around. Seriously.
Spiders and cave spiders Twice their normal size (eight times your height), with double health and half again the bite. Avoid. Climb a blade of grass and wait for daylight.
Bees and silverfish Also twice normal size, with double health and a stronger sting or bite. Same.
Everything else Normal size, which to you is huge. Your half-strength swing makes every fight longer. Bring your best weapon.

The grass forest

Giant Grass grows in blades several blocks tall all over the meadow. The stem down the middle of each blade is solid: you can stand on it and climb it like a ladder. The tallest blades carry a Giant Bloom on top, a yellow flower head that glows faintly so you can spot it from the ground.

A blade falls like a tree. Cut one and everything above the cut topples over, away from you, and bursts apart where it lands. A bloom on top crumbles into pollen when its blade goes.

What to bring home

Find Where Why it's worth it
Giant Pollen Break a Giant Bloom: 2 to 4 pollen, more with Fortune. Garden Beetles sometimes drop one. The Serum stand-in (below).
Giant Grass Breaks by hand and drops itself. A climbable, see-through decorative plant for your base.

Serum and getting home

  • The arrival Box's cache holds 2 Serum Ampoules.
  • Native stand-in: Giant Pollen. It replaces Somnium Powder in the Synthesizer.
  • Near the Box you are your own size again. Walk back to it with the Serum still in you and close the door.

Tips

  • Climb up, then cut down. Climb a tall blade to its bloom and break it from the stem: the light fall is nothing to you now.
  • Never hit a beetle by accident. Watch your swings when one is grazing nearby.
  • Get home or get high before dark: a giant spider is the worst thing in this world.
  • Build or craft near the Box, where you are normal size and have normal reach.
  • Fall damage is easy to forget at home. Your safe drop shrinks back the moment you return to the Box.

Birds

Birds you can photograph for your bird log here. Open one to turn it round, watch it move and hear its call.

The traveler's tape

Every arrival Box has a chest by its door holding a cassette: the last traveler reading their journal of this world aloud. This is what they say. It gives a lot away.

Read the journal (spoilers)

I stepped out of the Box into a meadow, and the meadow was a forest, and every blade of grass was a tree. It took me a while to understand that the world was not bigger: I was smaller, a quarter of my size, with legs that carry me nowhere fast and arms that can barely reach a shelf. The beetles graze in herds and leave me alone unless I hit one, and then the whole herd comes; a spider here is something out of a nightmare, twice as big as the ones at home. Falling is the one thing that got easier, so I climb the tallest blades and break the yellow blooms on top: their pollen goes into the Synthesizer in place of Somnium Powder. Near the Box I am my own size again, which is the only reason I could build a Box at all; walk back to it with the Serum still in you and close the door.
