What happens when you arrive

You step out of the Box into water one block deep, laid over a floor of polished black stone so smooth the whole sky lies in it. It goes on like that to every horizon. The sun moves as usual, the moon is swollen, and the stars never set, so even at noon the sea is full of them. Every few dozen chunks a small island of sand breaks the surface, with a dead bush or two. It is beautiful and very quiet. Don't stay out on the water too long.

The rule: the sea keeps watch

No monsters spawn here. But about a minute after you arrive, something that lives in the sea's reflection takes an interest in you, and only you.

Time on the water What happens
After 1 minute The dread begins. You alone hear whispers, and see the still sea stir near you. Now and then a head and shoulders rise out of the water far off (40 to 56 blocks), watching. It sinks again if you stare at it for half a second, walk within 24 blocks, or hit it.
After 2.5 minutes The Unreflected rises full height 10 to 14 blocks behind you, and hunts you across the water.

The Unreflected has 90 hearts and can only wade where there is sea.

Its move What it does How to deal with it
Grab Within 14 blocks it reaches out a tentacle, winds up briefly, then drags you toward it. Hit it and the hold breaks.
Slam Anyone else within 4 blocks takes 8 damage. Keep your distance.
The catch If it drags you all the way in, it pulls you under and lets you up on a random island far away, under a Mirage. See below.

Escaping it: get 64 blocks away, or stand on land out of its reach for 15 seconds. It sinks and comes back about 75 seconds later. When you leave the world, it is gone. (The clock starts over each visit, if you die, or if the server restarts.)

The Mirage

Caught, you come up on sand you have never seen, and there are Boxes everywhere: one on every island in sight. All of them but the real arrival Box dissolve as you get near. Reaching the real one ends the Mirage at once; otherwise the haze lifts after 3 minutes and the false Boxes vanish together.

What to bring home

Find Where Why it's worth it
Still Water Bottle Use a glass bottle on the sea. Water that never ripples and never warms. It runs the Cryo Stabilizer without ice.
Mirror Stone The whole sea floor (any pickaxe). Polished black stone as hard as deepslate.
Sand The islands. Smelt it to glass and craft more bottles on the spot.

Serum and getting home

  • The arrival Box's cache holds 2 Serum Ampoules.
  • Native stand-in: Still Water Bottle. Right-click it into the Cryo Stabilizer and the Stabilizer runs on it instead of ice. Fill as many as you like: the whole sea is the supply, and the islands' sand makes the bottles.

Tips

  • Bring glass bottles, a furnace and fuel. With those, one trip stocks your lab's coolant for a long time.
  • Fill your bottles near the Box in the first minute, before anything starts watching.
  • Carry a sword even here. A single hit breaks the Unreflected's grab.
  • If you are caught, don't panic: head for the nearest Box, and if it dissolves, try the next. Or wait out the three minutes.
  • The Box is the only landmark. Note its coordinates before you wander.

Birds

Birds you can photograph for your bird log here. Open one to turn it round, watch it move and hear its call.

The traveler's tape

Every arrival Box has a chest by its door holding a cassette: the last traveler reading their journal of this world aloud. This is what they say. It gives a lot away.

Read the journal (spoilers)

Second day on the water, and the weathered Box I woke beside is still the only landmark I have. The sea is one block deep from here to the horizon, laid over a floor of black stone so polished that the sky lies in it and the stars show at noon. Nothing hunts on this water, so the only trouble is the glare and the long walk between the islands of sand, each with a dead bush or two for company. A glass bottle dipped in the sea comes up full of water that never stirs and never warms, cold enough to stand in for the ice the Serum's last step asks for, and the islands' sand will melt down to more bottles. When you have had enough of the quiet, step back into the Box with the Serum still in you and shut the door.
