Colorless

Light

Home, drained to grey: the city stands, but anything with color is precious, and hunted.

What happens when you arrive

You step out of the Box and the world has come back grey: the grass, the sky, your own hands. For a moment you think the Serum has ruined your eyes. It hasn't. This world is a copy of your own home, block for block, with the paint drained out of it. Only the strongest colors survive here, and anything bright you carry glows like a coal. That matters, because the tall pale figures in the streets can see nothing else.

The rule: color is a lantern

What's different How it works
Everything is grey The world is seen through a filter that keeps only vivid colors. Whatever color you carry (dyes, flowers, gems) burns out of the grey.
It's your home The land is your Overworld's terrain, and whatever players built at home comes over too, drained to grey: red beds become grey beds, wool and concrete and glass go grey, flowers become Ashen Blooms. Chests and signs arrive empty. Changes made at home later come over too.
A few things kept their color In a city start: the traffic lights, the neon signs and the paintings in the College Gallery. That's where the hunters gather.
Pale Hunters Every zombie and skeleton is a Pale Hunter instead (see below).

The Pale Hunters

Tall, faceless grey figures, a little taller than you. They are blind to everything but color.

  • If you carry nothing colorful, anywhere in your inventory, they ignore you completely.
  • If you carry anything colorful, they see you from up to 48 blocks away and hunt you.
  • Each blow that lands steals one colorful item. The first thing a hunter steals it holds in its fist (and drops when killed); everything after that, it bleaches to nothing.
  • Once you have no color left, it loses interest.
  • With nobody to hunt, hunters drift to whatever in the city still has its color and stand under it, looking up.

What counts as colorful:

Category Items
Dyes and flowers Every dye, every flower
Gems Diamonds, emeralds, lapis, amethyst and other gems, Quantum Shards
Metals Gold ingots, nuggets and raw gold; copper ingots and raw copper
Dusts Redstone, glowstone dust
Food Apples, golden apples, carrots, golden carrots
This world Chroma Shards and Chroma Crystal

Spiders and Endermen also spawn here, and they don't care about color.

The people

In a city start, the city's people are here too, grey-clad and frightened of color. Come near them holding something colorful and they back away. Some will tell you to put it away: "Put that away. Please. They can see it from three blocks over."

Chroma Crystal: the one colored stone

Deep underground, between Y -48 and Y 48, small rare veins of Chroma Crystal kept their color. It glows, and an open face sheds flecks of bright color now and then, so a vein can be spotted across a dark cave. It drops Chroma Shards like an ore.

The catch: the moment you pick up a shard, you're carrying color, and every hunter within 48 blocks knows it.

What to bring home

Find Where Why it's worth it
Chroma Shard Mine Chroma Crystal, deep. A Serum active: it replaces Somnium Powder in the Synthesizer.
Ashen Bloom Where flowers grew at home. A grey flower that no hunter looks at twice.

Serum and getting home

  • The arrival Box's cache holds 2 Serum Ampoules.
  • Native stand-in: Chroma Shard. It goes into the Synthesizer in place of Somnium Powder. The price of brewing a way out is carrying color past the hunters.

Tips

  • Empty your pockets of anything bright before you step out of the Box. Leave gold, redstone, gems, dyes, flowers, apples and carrots at home.
  • Bring food that isn't colorful: bread, cooked meat and potatoes are safe.
  • Dig for chroma crystal close to the Box, and go straight back with your shards.
  • Hunters stand under lit traffic signals and in the Gallery when idle. Give those spots a wide berth.
  • Walk back to the Box the same way you came: grey, and unseen.

The traveler's tape

Every arrival Box has a chest by its door holding a cassette: the last traveler reading their journal of this world aloud. This is what they say. It gives a lot away.

Read the journal (spoilers)

The world came back grey when I stepped out of the Box, grass and sky and my own hands, and I thought the Serum had ruined my eyes. It is the place: only the strongest colors survive here, and the flowers in my pack glowed like coals. The tall pale ones see nothing else; they ignored me until I picked a poppy, and then three of them came from nowhere and tore it out of my hand. Deep in the stone there is a crystal that kept its colors, and its shards brew like Somnium if you can carry them home past the hunters. Empty your pockets of anything bright before you leave the weathered Box, and walk back to it the same way: grey, and unseen.
