resonance-hillsWhat happens when you arrive¶
The hills are humming. Pale crystal veins streak the hillsides around your Box, and geodes of it break the surface here and there. Every so often the land itself hums a note, and every crystal in earshot answers. Some notes make crystal grow. One note makes it shatter.
The rule: every crystal answers a note¶
Any note played near crystal counts: a note block, a
Tuning Fork, or the world's own humming. Octave doesn't
matter, only the pitch.
| Note | Note block clicks | What it does | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| F sharp | 0, 12 or 24 (a fresh note block is already F sharp) | 12 blocks | |
| C | 6 or 18 | Shatters every |
8 blocks |
| Anything else | Nothing. |
The hills hum on their own about every 40 seconds near each traveler (within 16 blocks of you). Three times in five it is an F sharp; twice in five it is a C. So a cluster that has just grown is in danger until you mine it.
Glass counts
A C shatters any glass and glass panes within 8 blocks, including your own windows and any glass you placed. Build with something else here.
Beyond that, it is gentle country under a soft fog: plains animals by day and the usual monsters at night.
Growing chime crystal¶
The crystal grows just like amethyst, only on command:
- Find a chime geode. They are eight times as common as amethyst geodes and reach up into the hills, so most break the surface somewhere. Its inner layer is Budding Chime.
- Play F sharp nearby: a note block, or your Tuning Fork. Each F sharp makes buds sprout and grow.
- Mine the clusters at once, before the hills hum a C.

The Tuning Fork¶
A hand-held note block. Use it to strike its note where you stand. Sneak and use to tune it up a semitone (from the top F sharp it wraps back to the bottom). Its tooltip shows its pitch. It is made from copper alone, so you can make one from the hills' own ore on arrival.
Serum and getting home¶
- The arrival Box's cache holds 2 Serum Ampoules.
- Native stand-in:
Chime Shard. It takes the place of Somnium Powder in the Synthesizer. A stranded
traveler grows their way home: find a geode, sing it F sharp, and mine fast.
Tips¶
- A fresh note block is already an F sharp. Place one beside a geode and click it, and you have a crystal farm.
- Keep your Tuning Fork on F sharp. If you tune past it, count: six clicks up from F sharp is the C that ruins everything.
- Use a pickaxe on clusters: it doubles the shards.
- Don't build with glass here: the next C within 8 blocks takes it.
Birds¶
Birds you can photograph for your bird log here. Open one to turn it round, watch it move and hear its call.
- Tuning Warbler: common
- Shatterloon: rare, dangerous

The traveler's tape¶
Every arrival Box has a chest by its door holding a cassette: the last traveler reading their journal of this world aloud. This is what they say. It gives a lot away.
Read the journal (spoilers)
The whole country sings. The hills are seamed with pale crystal, and when a note is struck nearby every crystal in earshot answers it. An F sharp, any octave, makes the budding stone sprout and the buds swell into clusters; a C, a tritone off, shatters every bud, cluster and windowpane around you, and what breaks that way leaves nothing behind. The land hums notes of its own every so often, so harvest a cluster as soon as it is grown, before the hills sing it apart. I made a tuning fork from a few copper ingots and it serves as well as any note block; the shards ground in the Synthesizer in place of Somnium Powder, and the Serum came out true. The weathered Box hums too, but in no key I know; with the Serum in me and the door shut, it takes me back to the hallway of doors.
