monsoon-floodWhat happens when you arrive¶
Green lowlands, swamp oaks and mangroves, reeds on every pond, and rain that never stops. The fog closes in at about 70 blocks. It feels like a gentle swamp, and nothing here wants to hurt you. But the water you are standing next to was lower an hour ago, and it is coming up. Every two and a half minutes the sea rises a block. Find the high ground before you go exploring.
The rule: the water rises¶
| What happens | The numbers |
|---|---|
| The rise | The water stands 1 block higher every 2.5 minutes. A twenty-minute visit sees it climb about eight blocks. |
| The warning | "The rain thickens. The water rises in 10 seconds." Then: "The water rises." |
| How high | Up to 40 blocks above the old sea level. The plains and low hills go under; the high ground and the mountains stay dry. |
| It never goes down | The rise only counts time someone is here, so the next visitor finds the water where the last one left it. |
| Endless rain | The weather never clears. |
| Beds | Explode: sleep can't stop the rain, and a spawn point here could wake you up under the flood. |
What stays dry: water pours over a roof, not under it. A house, a cave or your own shelter stays dry until the flood climbs over its top, and even then only gets in through a door left open. The arrival Box is never flooded: keep its door shut and it stays dry inside however deep it lies.
monsoon-box-underwaterWhat lives here¶
Frogs and turtles on the shores, tropical fish, cod and squid in the water, axolotls, and bats. No monsters at all, not even from dungeon spawners.
What to bring home¶
| Find | Where | Why it's worth it |
|---|---|---|
| Flowering pads on the open water and ponds, a few patches in every chunk. Breaks at a touch. | Grinds into |
|
| Swamp and mangrove wood, clay, ores | The land, while it is still dry. | Ordinary Overworld-style resources. |
Serum and getting home¶
- The arrival Box's cache holds 2 Serum Ampoules.
- Native stand-in:
Rain Lily. It does the Pale Lotus's job: grind it in the Mortar Station into Lotus Pulp, and
carry on with the Serum from there. A stranded traveler can start a new batch here. - The way back may be a river by the time you walk it. Bring a boat, or Depth Strider and a Respiration helmet.
Tips¶
- Mark the high ground on arrival. The path you walked in on will be under water when you walk back.
- A boat makes the second half of any visit far easier, and lilies are easiest to pick from one.
- Watch for the "rain thickens" warning when you're swimming: you have ten seconds before the surface moves up.
- Build on hills, not on the shore. A base by the water today is a reef tomorrow.
- Since nothing hostile spawns, Monsoon is a safe place to fish, farm turtles and collect axolotls.

The traveler's tape¶
Every arrival Box has a chest by its door holding a cassette: the last traveler reading their journal of this world aloud. This is what they say. It gives a lot away.
Read the journal (spoilers)
It has not stopped raining since I stepped out of the Box, and I have stopped expecting it to. The sea comes up a hand's breadth every few minutes, a little after the rain thickens, and it does not go back down. Houses stay dry until the water tops their roofs, and so does the Box if you keep its door shut; it was sitting under four feet of water when I swam back to it. The flowering lilies on the ponds grind into the same pulp as the pale lotus, so the Serum can be started here. Mark the high ground before you go exploring: the path you walked in on will be a river when you walk back.
