harvest-home-greenWhat happens when you arrive¶
You step out on a hill above a village green. Around it lies a county of hedged fields, drystone walls and thatched roofs, with a watermill turning on the stream. Nobody here has ever built an engine, and nobody needs one: everyone farms, the mill turns by water, and the year goes round in four seasons. Nothing hostile lives here at all. This is a world for slowing down, and it has a farm waiting for you.
The first person to find is Abel Thatcher, the miller, at the end of the lane past the stream.
The rules: hand power and the turning year¶
| What's different | How it works |
|---|---|
| No engines | You cannot place redstone, pistons, rails, hoppers, TNT or anything else that would do work without a hand on it. The block stays in your hand and you're told: "Nothing like that has ever run here. Put your hands to it instead." |
| Four seasons | Each season lasts 3 in-game days, so a full year is 12 days. Spring, Summer, Harvest, Winter, round and round. You are told when the season turns. |
| Nothing hostile | No monsters spawn by any means: not at night, not from spawners, not from eggs. |
| No money | Everything is priced in what a farm grows: barley, wheat (which the county calls oats), pumpkins (marrows) and flour. |
The people¶
| Who | Where | What they want |
|---|---|---|
| Abel Thatcher, the miller | The mill lane, by his door | Gives you the holding. Mills barley into flour. |
| Nell Thatcher, his daughter | Inside the mill, by the stones | Oats for the cart horse. |
| Parson Greaves | The church, at his lectern | Honeycomb for candles. |
| Hob Ferrin, the smith | The smithy, at his anvil | Leather for his bellows. |
| Marian Plough | The Plough inn, on the green | Barley for her brew. Also the source of thatch. |
| Squire Whitlow | The green | Judges the marrow at the Harvest Fair. |
| Jem Pedlar, the chapman | His stall on the green | Trades (see below). |
| Tom Hedger, Bess Marrow, Wat Oatley, Agnes Rook | Their cottage doors, nearest the green | Tom and Bess each have a small errand. |
Everyone talks. People always go back to their posts, so you'll find them in the same place every visit.
harvest-home-millYour quest: A Holding of Your Own¶
Abel has a deed to the Hedger holding, an abandoned farm east of the green, and your name goes where the blank was.
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Find Abel at the watermill. He gives you the |
| 2 | Find the holding, east of the green. Right-click the deed and it tells you which way the gate lies from where you stand. |
| 3 | Mend the roof. Ask Marian at the Plough for thatch (tell her Abel sent you): she sends 8 |
| 4 | Clear the thistle: break 24 ferns, tall ferns or dead bushes in the holding's yard or its two fields. |
| 5 | Sow 16 barley on the holding. Till the ground with a hoe first. Lost your seed? Abel makes it up, or Jem sells 8 for 4 wheat. |
| 6 | Tell Abel the holding is a farm again. |
Reward: a
Stone Well-Head and 16 more Barley Seed.
The errands¶
Each villager has one small favour. The tracker shows every one you've taken up. Each pays with something for the farm.
| Errand | Ask | Bring | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oats for the Grey | Nell | 12 Wheat | |
| Candles for the Nave | Parson Greaves | 3 Honeycomb | 4 |
| New Bellows | Hob Ferrin | 4 Leather | |
| Barley for the Brew | Marian | 24 |
|
| The Harvest Fair | Squire Whitlow | 1 Pumpkin, during Harvest season | |
| Tom's Hedge | Tom Hedger | 8 |
16 Barley Seed and 4 Thatch Bundles |
| Bess's Eggs | Bess Marrow | 6 Eggs | 2 |
Abel's mill: any time, bring him 8 Barley for 2 Sacks of Flour.
Where to find things:
- Wheat and barley: reap ripe crops from the county's fields, or grow your own. Ripe barley drops seed too.
- Honeycomb: only a Bee Skep makes it here. Earn one from Marian, or buy one from Jem for 24 barley.
- Leather: the county's cattle graze the walled pastures.
- Hedgerow: break it out of any field hedge.
- Eggs: hens peck about in every farmyard but yours.
- Pumpkins: marrow patches, or grow them from seeds (Jem sells 4 for 8 barley). The tracker counts down the days to Harvest.
Not a quester?
Every farm upgrade the errands pay with is also on Jem Pedlar's stall, for more produce. If you'd rather grow than ask, you'll still get them all.
Farm upgrades¶
| Upgrade | What it does |
|---|---|
| Makes the crops within 6 blocks grow faster. | |
| Water that never runs dry: fill a bucket from it, and it keeps the farmland within 5 blocks wet, stream or no stream. | |
| Fills one honey level every 30 seconds of daylight. Take the comb by hand when it is heavy. | |
| Lights your lane. | |
| Use it on grass or dirt and it tills a whole row 7 blocks long in the direction you face. | |
| Use them anywhere on your holding and the old barn is rebuilt: a loft, two stalls and a sound roof. Once only. |

Livestock¶
Horse Halter: set it on the ground and a broken-in cart horse is led up. Ride it without a saddle or
taming. It eats and breeds like a horse.
Hay Cart: offer the horse a cart to hitch it (or crouch and click the horse bare-handed to hitch the
nearest parked cart, or loose it). The cart holds a chest's worth of cargo (crouch and click) and carries one
passenger (click). Towing slows the horse a little.
Shepherd's Whistle: blow it with no dog of yours nearby and a sheep dog comes over the hedge and is
yours. Blow it again (or click the dog) and it gathers the sheep around you into a flock. Blow crouching (or crouch
and click the dog) to sit it down or stand it up.- County cattle come in red, dun and belted coats and keep together in herds. They milk, breed on wheat and drop leather.
harvest-home-cartWhat's in the mill cellar? (spoilers)
Ask Nell about the cellar. Under the mill is her secret workshop, and in it, against the stream wall, the one thing
in the county that should not exist: a
Steam Pump of brass and rivets, with a boiler and firebox beside it.
Promise to keep her secret.

Serum and getting home¶
- The arrival Box's cache holds 2 Serum Ampoules.
- There is no native Serum ingredient here, so bring what you need.
Tips¶
- Talk to everyone on your first day. An errand only shows in the tracker once you've been asked.
- Start the Harvest Fair early: get your pumpkin now, because the Squire only takes it in Harvest season, and the season turns every three days.
- Put the Scarecrow and the Well-Head in the middle of your fields so their reach covers the most crops.
- Leave your redstone at home. It won't go down here.
- It's completely safe at night, so work late.
